Becoming A Kiniya Assistant Leader

Becoming an Assistant Leader at Camp Dudley at Kiniya is the third step a young woman takes toward eventually running her own cabin. An AL is a paid member of the Camp staff who’s chief duty is to assist her Cabin Leadership Team in assuring that the campers in her cabin have a safe and fulfilling summer. Those accepted to work at Camp are called upon to exhibit those qualities expected of all Leaders. Not everyone gets to be an Assistant Leader. The number of positions available does not allow us to take all that apply. We will consider all applications and we will accept some AL’s for half season.

Each girl must read and understand the Assistant Leader job description and be willing to commit to all that is being asked of her. In addition, we ask that you adhere to the following time schedule and recommended means of communication.

  • Beginning September 1st, submit a personal, old-fashioned letter to Marnie expressing your desire to become an AL. Once the letter has been received, you will receive an official application from camp.
  • By January 15th, All AL applications should be on file at Kiniya.
  • February 15th, All applicants will be advised of the status of their application.

Please read the accompanying outline of duties and make sure that you and your parents understand what your responsibilities will be should you decide to pursue this challenging and most fulfilling task.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the AL position, a young woman must have successfully completed her JL year at Camp Dudley at Kiniya, had a favorable review from the Leadership Development Team and be 17 years of age and a rising high school senior. In the event that the young woman is new to Kiniya, she must have a personal interview with the Camp Director.

General Responsibilities

The AL assists her Leader and Camp in general in all aspects of daily Camp life. She must be honest, prompt, display integrity and be able to follow through on all tasks. She will set an appropriate example for her campers in the cabin, at meals and at group activities. All AL’s will be expected to assist with and be present for pre-season orientation. An AL must understand and uphold all of the rules and values of Camp Dudley at Kiniya.

Specific Duties

The AL will be assigned to a team and will serve that team as an assistant or head coach both during team competition and during all majors programs or she will be assigned to officiate at a sporting event. She will write at least three camper reports per half under direct supervision of her Leader. The AL will also serve as the assistant on at least one hike or canoe trip each half.

Supervision

The AL is directly responsible to her Cabin Leader. As a member of Kiniya’s leadership hierarchy, she will also interact with and be accountable to her Division-Head, Senior Staff members, the Leadership Development Team and, ultimately, to the Camp Director.

Privileges
  • 2 nights out each week. From the conclusion of Vespers until 11:30PM, AL’s are allowed to be out of their cabins for two evenings each week. These nights out will be determined at the start of each summer and will occasionally be taken, as a group, off campus for special events.
  • AL Trip. Once each half, the Al’s will be allowed 1 supervised day off and may choose to go, as a group, on a trip to a nearby location. The day off begins when appropriate coverage is in place and ends with their return before 11:30PM of that same day.
Final Note

The Assistant Leader is historically assigned to a cabin whose Leader has many duties outside the cabin. The AL must, therefore, be willing to place the needs of her campers and Kiniya in general above her own. One step away from the responsibilities of a Leader, she must always embody the Kiniya spirit and the sensibility of, “The Other Fellow First.”

Any and all of the above information may be modified at the Director’s discretion.
